St. Paul’s Hospital of Iloilo (SPHI) embarked on its ISO journey in 2020 with the vision of standardizing hospital policies, procedures, and processes to strengthen organizational excellence and enhance the quality of healthcare services.
Preparatory activities, orientations, and capacity-building initiatives commenced that same year. However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily interrupted the hospital’s certification efforts. Despite this challenge, SPHI remained steadfast in its commitment to achieving internationally recognized standards.
In September 2022, the hospital resumed its ISO preparations with renewed dedication and a stronger sense of purpose. Through the collective efforts of its leadership, medical staff, department heads, and personnel, SPHI successfully implemented management systems aligned with global best practices in quality management, environmental stewardship, and occupational health and safety.
The hospital’s certification journey formally progressed with the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System (QMS) Stage 1 Audit conducted on January 20, 2023, followed by the successful completion of the certification process. On June 2, 2023, SPHI was awarded its ISO 9001:2015 certification by Certification Partner Global (CPG), recognizing the hospital’s commitment to quality healthcare, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.
To ensure the sustained effectiveness of its Quality Management System, SPHI successfully underwent the 1st Surveillance Audit on March 1, 2024, and the 2nd Surveillance Audit on February 7, 2025, both resulting in recommendations for continued certification. The hospital is scheduled to undergo its Recertification Audit on June 19–20, 2026, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to maintaining the highest standards of quality management.
Building on the success of its Quality Management System, SPHI expanded its management framework to include environmental and occupational health and safety standards. On May 13, 2024, the hospital successfully completed the Initial Stage 1 Audit for ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System (EMS) and ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS), followed by the Initial Stage 2 Audit on June 19–20, 2024.
These efforts culminated in the awarding of the ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 certifications on September 27, 2024, marking a significant milestone in SPHI’s transformation into an ISO Integrated Management System (IMS)-Certified Healthcare Institution. These certifications affirmed the hospital’s commitment to environmental sustainability, workplace safety, resource efficiency, waste reduction, and the well-being of its employees, patients, and stakeholders.
Further demonstrating the effective implementation and continual improvement of its Integrated Management System, SPHI successfully passed the 1st Surveillance Audit for ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 on July 24–25, 2025, and was recommended for continued certification. The 2nd Surveillance Audit for both standards is scheduled for June 19–20, 2026.
These achievements reflect the unwavering dedication and collaborative efforts of SPHI’s leadership, medical staff, department heads, physicians, and personnel. Under the visionary leadership of Sr. Arcelita S. Sarnillo, SPC, with the guidance of Mr. Eliseo Manarez Jr., ISO Consultant, and the leadership of Ms. Sonia Amazon, RN, Head of Quality Assurance, SPHI successfully advanced its ISO journey and cultivated a culture of excellence, quality, safety, environmental responsibility, and continuous improvement throughout the organization.
Today, SPHI proudly stands as an ISO Integrated Management System (IMS)-certified healthcare institution and the first private hospital in Iloilo City to attain Triple ISO Certification (ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, and ISO 45001:2018). This achievement reflects the hospital’s unwavering commitment to internationally recognized standards in Quality Management, Environmental Management, and Occupational Health and Safety. As SPHI continues to move forward, it remains dedicated to innovation, operational excellence, patient-centered care, environmental stewardship, and the promotion of a safer and healthier environment for all.
